Pinterest for Dudes?…Are Testosterone Heavy Photo Sharing Sites the Next Big Thing?

You read that headline correctly.  The next big thing in social media just might be the “Pinterest for Dudes” category.  As scary as that sounds, it’s something that’s real – check out Manteresting.com… warning – some of the content is barely SFW.

As unbelievably butch as this all sounds, it’s actually making headlines; Businessweek covered several of these emerging startups in a recent article (here).  The story quotes John Manoogian, CTO of social media advertising firm 140 Proof, validating that yes, there is “a market for a male version of Pinterest.”

What’s so different in these new social media channels?  Lexicon, for one – you don’t “pin” something on Manteresting, you “nail” it.  Likewise, you don’t have a “board,” you have a “workbench.”

Have at it boys.  You can now post photos without feeling like your masculinity is at stake…

Post-Future of Flying

If you have ever sat through a trans-Atlantic flight in a middle seat (as I did about three weeks ago) you might find yourself wondering about how we could make flying a better experience.  While it’s unlikely that we’ll see dramatic change the near future, there was a time when America was a bit more creative (optimistic) in its future gazing.  Check out this post from the Paleofuture blog (here) for a look at Northrup’s “flying wing” concept.

The only drawback?  Not many window seats…

Is the Sky Falling in Media?

From Forbes.com

By RJ Bardsley

There is a great piece in Forbes this week about the shift in media consumption habits (read it here).  The truth is that everything about the way we discover, consumer and share content is shifting.  But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  What we do need to watch out for is the authenticity and truthfulness of new sources.  Continue reading

Well – it’s getting to be that time of year when it’s cold almost everywhere.  I thought that maybe everyone could use a little bit of summer right now.  Here are a few pics from this past June on the Bardsley family farm outside of Boston.  Enjoy and remember that it will be warm, sunny and green again in just a few months!

You’ll Never Get this Day Back: Seven Things You Can Do to Make the Most of Every Day.

By RJ Bardsley

One of the things I miss most about my father is having him around to talk to when things get rough or busy or interesting in my life.  He was one of the few people I felt like I could talk to – without having a specific reason – and he would listen and be there in all the right ways.  When I had trouble, he would sit back and let me work through things with my own words, occasionally offering guidance here or there, or telling me that things would work out OK, if that was what I needed to hear.  When I had an exciting story to tell him about something that happened in my life, he would partake in my enthusiasm; his responses to my barrage of yammering would reflect the same excitement I felt, making whatever achievement I was talking about seem so much better.  Sometimes I would just call him up to talk about a story I had just read or a work out I had just finished.  He was never bored with the conversation, he always had time for these calls and he always had just the right thing to say – whatever the situation. Browser Wars and Valley Traffic Heat Up Again – Could This be Good News for the Tech Sector?

netscape nBy RJ Bardsley

There are three things that I remember vividly about the late 1990s.

  • The browser wars between Netscape Navigator and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer made constant headlines in almost every business and technology publication in existence;
  • The traffic on the 101 in Silicon Valley was so bad that it took two hours to get from Palo Alto to San Francisco – any time of day;
  • And Madonna, assisted by DJ/producer William Orbit, came out with Ray of Light – possibly the best CD she (or anyone? No, I can’t say that, I would lose my entire male reader base except possibly my friend Jack) ever produced.  Continue reading

A Few Days in Hong Kong

Last week I had a couple of business meetings in Hong Kong.  While I’ve traveled a lot to Europe and around my own country, I have never been to Asia before this week.

The first thing I should say is how incredible the Racepoint team here is.  The primary reason for my trip was business, and I have learned some pretty amazing things about how our industry works in this region.  But the team also took the time to show me around this city.

There are a couple of runners in the office here and on Friday night they took me on a spectacular run along Bowen Road, a windy path that cuts through a lush jungle hillside overlooking the city.  The views were breathtaking and I got to see more skyscrapers than I think I have ever seen in my entire life.

After our meetings wrapped up on Saturday morning I went shopping – and boy is that a completely new and different experience here.  I was in a 13 story mall yesterday.  Yep – you read that correctly – 13 floors.   There were three Cartier stores within a 70 yard radius of wherever I was standing at   almost any given point yesterday.

I wrapped up the evening on Saturday attending a party at the very posh Hong Kong Football Club.  It was truly an amazing weekend… and I still have one day left.

More later on the rest of the trip.

Learning to Surf in Waikiki

By RJ Bardsley

Today I went on a new adventure… surfing. I opted for a private lesson to get my feet wet. I had tried a group lesson in the past but hadn’t had a lot of luck with that.  Today was different. With someone to explain things to me and help me learn when and how to catch a wave things made more sense.

My first run ended quickly with me tumbling over into the water… but my second ride in was a success. The instructor gave me a shove and told me to paddle. A couple seconds later he was shouting for me to get up… slowly I shifted onto my knees and then hoisted myself up the rest of the way, cantelevering gently on the board and feeling a little like a bobble head on a great big dashboard.

The feeling was incredible.  It’s very much like skiing for the first time except that nothing is pinching your toes or tweaking your knees and it’s 87° and not 15° outside.

I spent the next two hours cruising in on relatively small waves, giggling to myself every time I managed to stand up on the board.  I had a couple of wipe outs and two crashes into other surfers, but nothing scary.  I think I will head out again tomorrow or the next day for another go!

Three Things I Like About the Samsung Galaxy Note II

By RJ Bardsley

Over the weekend I bit the bullet and upgraded my mobile device.  I had been carrying around an old Motorola Photon for about a year and a half and this weekend I decided to replace it with the new Samsung Galaxy Note II.  The Photon was a great phone, but I was surprised to see just how outdated it had become in less than 18 months.  If you are considering a Samsung, here are a few things that might encourage you. Three Things About Lincoln

By RJ Bardsley

Last Sunday Dana and I went to see Lincoln, the movie.  It opened early in San Francisco, so we took in an afternoon matinee and I was not disappointed.  It was the best movie I’ve seen in a while.  Now, I could just gush openly about it, but I won’t.  I’ll go through the three things I loved the most about the movie, and then let you see it for yourself.  There are no spoilers below, I promise.
